Phegopteris connectilis Beech Fern

Llawredynen y Fagwyr

(Michaux) Watt

Phegopteris connectilis, Beech Fern, is a small, soft-textured, pale-green perennial fern which grows in colonies in moist, shady banks in woodland, near waterfalls and in rocky places. Large colonies can develop from the underground, creeping rhizome system. The fronds have a broadly triangular shape with the bottom pair of pinna pointing backwards. This is usually quite distinctive and affords a useful field character for identification. Beech Fern is not common in West Glamorgan and is confined entirely to upland areas in Neath Port Talbot, including Craig y Llyn which has some expensive populations.
