Lithospermum officinale Common Gromwell

Grawn yr Haul

Linnaeus

A distictive perennial, somewhat like a very leafy forget-me-not, with coarsley hairy stems and leaves. The small, cream-coloured flowers are produced in June and July. It is fairly strict calcicole and is found most frequently on base-rich soils, including sand dunes. It has a local distribution in Wales and in West Glamorgan it is only found in coastal areas where it occurs in limestone grassland and sand dunes, e.g. Whiteford Burrows.

This species is now known as Buglossoides arvensis (L) I.M. Johnst.
