(L.) Crantz
Broad-leaved Heleborine is a locally frequent orchid of woodland, scrub and dunes in Britain. It is relatively uncommon in Gower, where it occurs mostly in sand dunes, but it is frequently encountered in deciduous woodland and scrub in Neath Port Talbot. It is particularly frequent in the Vale of Neath where it is often found with deciduous trees along forest roads. It is rarely found with conifers. It is variable in appearance, but the flowers are usually dark pink in colour in our area. DNA evidence has revealed that populations in the Kenfig and Oxwich dune systems of south Wales are assignable to E. helleborine subsp. neerlandica 'Dutch helleborine', a taxon otherwise known only from the coastal dunes of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Populations at Whiteford and Morfa also resemble this taxon.
