Cornus sericea Red-osier Dogwood

Cwyros Coch

Linnaeus

A native of North America introduced in 1838 as a garden shrub and much planted in parks and shrubberies along roads and on industrial estates. It suckers vigourously and quickly forms large invasive clonal colonies. Unlike Cornus sanguinea it produces white, cream or yellowish berries. It has been widely planted in West Glamorgan and is probably the most common dogwood in the county. However it is confused with Cornus alba (which may be just a form of this species) and also with Cornus sanguinea ssp. australis.
