Cochlearia danica Danish Scurvygrass

Llwylys Denmarc

L.

A prostrate, somewhat fleshy or succulent, winter-annual crucifer that occurs on sea cliffs, sea walls, dunes and in grassy places in the upper saltmarsh. It also occurs along pavements in seaside towns and is one of most common plants of the roadside flora along motorways and other major roads that have been treated with salt in winter. It blooms profusely in Spring, with flowers varying in colour from white to pink. It is fairly common all along the coast in West Glamorgan where, in Spring, it can put on a spectacular display of pink flowers in the cliffland grasslands of south Gower. But it is perhaps most abundant in the salty roadside edges of the M4 and the A465, which is shown clearly in the distribution map.
