Cerastium fontanum Common Mouse-ear

Clust Llygoden Culddail

Baumg.

A common and very variable, hairy species of grasslands, verges and waste places. Flower parts are in 5s and plants rarely have any glandular hairs. A number of subspecies have been described, but Cerastium fontanum ssp.vulgare seems to be the most common in our area. There are scattered, mostly coastal records of Cerastium fontanum ssp. holosteoides, which is much less hairy. Cerastium fontanum is very common throughout West Glamorgan and is a charcateristic species of roadside verges and mesotrophic grasslands in general. It is also found in more ruderal habitats and it is a frequent component of the forest roadside verge community.
