Bottle Sedge is a robust sedge of acidic swamps, lake margins and permanently wet ditches. It is very similar to Bladder Sedge (Carex vesicaria) and is usually told from it by the shape of its fruits (utricles), which are distinctly flask-shaped (see photo); those of Bladder Sedge are somewhat ovoid with sides that taper gradually towards the tip. It is locally abundant in West Glamorgan occuring in such places as Oxwich Marsh, Crymlyn Fen, Llyn Fach and the swampy areas in and near Gors-llwyn. It occurs occasionally in wet ditches along forest roads in Neath Port Talbot. It has probably disappeared from many sites in West Glamorgan in the last 50 years with significantly fewer post-millenium records of it in the county.
