Armeria maritima Thrift

Archmain

(Miller) Willd.

Armeria maritima, Thrift, is an attractive pink-flowered, tufted perennial with slightly succulent, linear leaves. It is a plant of salt marshes, sea cliffs, salted roads and mountains. It can form large drifts of pink on West Glamorgan's salt marshes in early summer and equally striking displays on the limestone cliffs of south Gower. It has spread along the salted edges of the A465 near Neath in recent years. There are 2 recognised subspecies in Britain, but only ssp. maritima has been recorded in West Glamorgan.
