Amaranthus hybridus, Green Amaranth, is one of a number of Amaranthus species that occur as casual weeds in the British flora. Amaranthus is a American genus, but several of its members are naturalised widely throughout Europe. Green Amaranth is native to tropical and sub-tropical South America and probably does best in warm summers in temperate regions. It is largely introduced in grain and bird seed and like many memebers of the Amaranthaceae it prefers nutrient-rich soils. It is rarely recorded in West Glamorgan.
