Allium vineale Wild Onion

Craf Gwyllt

L.

Allium vineale, Wild Onion (also known as Crow Garlic), is a plant of grassy places and rough ground with a predominantly coastal distribution in West Glamorgan, particularly along the south Gower penninsular. The inflorescence usually consists of bulbils and there may or may not be pink or pale (greenish-white) flowers as well. Sometimes the inflorescence is only made up of flowers, but that is unusual in plants found in West Glamorgan. When first encountered it can be puzzling, but the hollow, circular leaves that smell of garlic, when crushed, immediately suggest Allium and the occurrence of bulbils in the inflorescence is a good identification feature.
