Ailanthus altissima Tree-of-heaven

Coed y Nefoedd

(Miller) Swingle

Ailanthus altissima, Tree of Heaven, is native to China. It grows to become a small shrub or tree with compound leaves, usually with 20 or more leaflets. It has a vigorous growth and it suckers relentlessly and can become quite invasive when planted in small gardens. It is dioecious and produces green flowers that give rise to winged fruits on female trees. It is widely planted in Britain where it spreads by suckering and occasionally naturalises.
