Agrostis canina Velvet Bent

Linnaeus

Agrostis canina is a perennial grass of wet meadows, marshes, wet heathland, mires and other wet, often acidic grassy places. It is frequently encountered in marshy grassland and wet heathland in West Glamorgan. It has a number of features that need to be confirmed for identification. Firstly the leaf has a long ligule (unlike Agrostis capillaris) and the spikelets usually have a conspicuous, bent awn (unlike Agrostis stolonifera). Also, it produces leafy stolons that creep along the ground which give rise to new vegetative shoots (unlike Agrostis vinealis), so that it tends to form loose mats.
