Acer platanoides Norway Maple

Masarn Norwy

Linnaeus

Norway Maple, is native to and found throughout Europe and the Caucasus, but it is an introduced species in Britain. In the deciduous forests of eastern, central Europe, e.g. the Bialowieza Forest in Poland, it grows to become a tall dominant tree and is the characteristic maple of these ancient woodlands. The leaves resemble those of Sycamore, but the lobes are drawn out into much finer and longer points. It is commonly planted in parks in Britain and frequently naturalises itself. It is widespread in West Glamorgan and good examples can be seen in Clyne Gardens, Singleton Park and Gnoll Country Park. In the latter it forms an avenue of trees at the edge of the Beechwoods where, in autumn, it often puts on a very colourful display as its leaves change colour from green to yellow and red.
