Abies delavayi Delavay's Silver-fir

Franch.

A small conifer that is native to the mountains of southwest China, Tibet, India Myanmar and Vietnam. It is named after Fr. Pierre Jean Mary Delavay, who discovered and collected it at high altitude in the Cang Mountain in the Yunnan province of southwest China. In cultivation it may grow to be as tall as 40m but at the tree-line in the Tibetan mountains it is usually less than 10m tall. Its attractive, conical growth form would make it a popular choice for cultivation in parks, but it is only grown occasionally, largely because it requires high rainfall and cool summers. It does not occur naturalised in the flora of West Galmorgan.
