Xanthoria parietina Common Orange Lichen

(L.) Th. Fr.

One of our most common, widespread and familiar lichens. This pollution-tolerant nitrophile can be very abundant on nutrient-enriched rocks, trees, walls and roofs in coastal and urban habitats. The thallus displays a moderate level of variation but typically has large, overlapping lobes with abundant apothecia. Is host to a number of lichenicolous fungi such as Illosporiopsis christiansenii and Telogalla olivieri.

Listed by Alan Orange in Flora of Glamorgan (Wade et al, 1994).
