Ramalina farinacea Shaggy Strap Lichen

(L.) Ach.

Ramalina farinacaea is a common epiphytic, foliose lichen which is found on nutrient-rich bark and occasionally on rock. It is the most common species of Ramalina in Britain. The narrowly strap-shaped thallus is grey-green all over with oval soralia containing soredia scattered along the branch margins and the thallus branches are usually channelled. These features give the thallus a distinctive look. Unlike other Ramalina species it is fairly tolerant of air pollution.

Listed by Alan Orange in Flora of Glamorgan (Wade et al, 1994).
