Pannaria rubiginosa Red-eyed Shingle-lichen

(Ach.) Bory

Pannaria rubiginosa is an Atlantic foliose lichen which grows on mossy, broadleaved trees at the edges of sheltered woodlands. It is widely distributed in Western Ireland and its main British distribution range is in western Scotland. It is also found in a few sites in north Wales and Cornwall, but is has disappeared from most of its former sites in southern England. It was only recently discovered in West Glamorgan by CRH on 27-Apr-23 in the upper Afan Valley, where it grows on a single Grey Willow (Salix cinerea) tree at the edge of a Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) coupe. This is the only known site for this species in south Wales and its occurrence there is notable. It appears to be a recent colonist and it is likely to be found in other similar locations in the plantations of Neath Port Talbot.

Listed by Alan Orange in Flora of Glamorgan as 'Listed by Watson (1953). Record needs confirmation.' (Wade et al, 1994).
