Morchella esculenta agg. Morel

Morel Cyffredin

(L.) Pers.

The fruiting bodies of morels have a characteristic honeycombe structure and are instantly recognisable. DNA analysis is beginning to show that there are probably many forms of the yellowish morels that deserve species ranking and Morchella esculenta (sensu lato) is probably an agregate of similar species. Morchella esculenta is often described as a species of broadleaved woodland, which may have mycorrhizal associations with some broadleaved trees. However, in West Glamorgan, all records are from coastal sand dunes and other sandy, coastal habitats and this form is more likely to be what is now known asĀ Morchella dunesis (Boud.) Clowez, but this may only become clear after DNA analysis.
