Cortinarius sommerfeltii is an attractive web cap that is found in mossy spruce forests. It has a dark, redish-brown cap that is often concentrically zoned, becoming paler towards the edge of the cap. In young, fresh specimens, the gills are a bright yellow-orange colour, which contrats with the rich brown colour of the cap. There are a number of similar species that it could be confused with and this is particularly problematic with more mature collections. Cortinarius croceus, which grows in coniferous and broad-leaved forests and is probably more common, has yellowish flesh and bright yellow gills when young, but lacks the zoned cap. Cortinarius cinnamomeus is a very common species of coniferous and broad-leaved forests which has a reddish-brown cap that is not zoned and persistently bright orange gills.
