Cortinarius paleaceus

Fr.

Corinarius paleaceus (synonymous with Cortinarius fexipes (Pers.) Fr.) is a common species in conifer forests and birch woodlnd in West Glamorgan. The grey, scaly, pointed cap and the violet-tinged floccose stem, usually with fluffy veil remnants, give it a very distinctive appearance. The fruiting bodies have a strong smell of Pelargonium.
