Warnstorfia fluitans Floating Hook-moss

(Hedw.) Loeske

An autoicous, pleurocarpous hook-moss which is usually found in very wet places such as acidic pools, ombrotrophic mires and wet heathland. It is quite variable but nevertheless distinctive, usually dark green with a loose, straggling form and long, slightly curved leaves. It is much more a species of wet base-poor habitats than other hook-mosses and it is rarely found in flushes. It has a scattered distribution in Britain but is uncommon in the east and it is widespread in Wales. It is frequent but not common in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are occasional in summer and autumn.
