Trichodon cylindricus Cylindric Ditrichum

(Hedw.) Schimp.

A dioicous, acrocarpous moss which forms loose colonies with long narrow, whip-like leaves. It is similar to Dicranella schreberiana but the leaves of that species are not as long and have a wide, sheathing leaf base. It is a pioneer species which grows on bare ground in arable fields, ruderal sites and on coal waste. It is quite widespread throughout Britain, including Wales, and perhaps under recorded. It has a scattered distribution in West Glamorgan, mostly in Neath Port Talbot, but it is rare or under recorded in Gower. Most plants are female and sporophyte capsules are very rare.
