Tortula marginata Bordered Screw-moss

(Bruch & Schimp.) Spruce

A small, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which grows in shaded habitats on mortar or walls and rocks in wooded areas. It is sometimes difficult to identify this species with confidence in the field, but one of its distinguishing features are the tongue-shaped leaves which have a pale border made up of elongated cells. It is a Mediterranean-Atlantic species with a southern and eastern distribution in Britain. It is rare in Wales with few records and very rare in West Glamorgan, where it was recorded as a new county (VC41) record by Sam Bosanquet in 2012. Sporophyte capsules are common in summer.
