Tortula caucasica Blunt-fruited Pottia

Lindb.

An autoicous, acrocarpous moss which is usually found on disturbed calcareous soils in arable fields, on tracks, in quarries and in gardens. One of its key features is the shape of the capsules, which are longer than wide. It is similar to the more common Tortula truncata, which has capsules which are not much longer than wide. It has a scattered distribution, mostly in southern Britain, but it is uncommon, perhaps under recorded and mostly coastal in Wales. It is mostly a species of the Gower coast in West Glamorgan but there are scattered records of it in ruderal sites and arable fields in Neath Port Talbot. Sporophyte capsules are abundant from autumn to spring.

This species may be better known as Tortula modica.
