Thuidium tamariscinum Common Tamarisk-moss

(Hedw.) Schimp.

A large, attractive, dioicous pleurocarpous moss with much divided (usually tripinnate) yellow-green shoots. It grows on the floor of deciduous and coniferous woodlands and sometimes occurs as an epiphyte at the bases of trees. It is usually unmistakable but it can be confused with Hylocomium splendens which also has a much divided shoot structure but that species has red stems and rarely looks as neat or attractive. It is a very common species in Britain and it is ubiquitous in the wooded areras of Wales as well as in scree and on cliffs. It is very common in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are uncommon.
