Tetrodontium brownianum Brown's Four-tooth Moss

(Dicks.) Schwaegr.

An autoicous, acrocarpous moss which grows in humid environments on moist siliceous rocks, often in rather dark overhangs or vertical faces where there is little competition from other bryophytes. Plants are tiny and only at all conspicuous when they have their sporophytes, which appear to be growing out of the rock. It is a relatively scarce, suboceanic species with a scattered, western distribution in Britain and a species of humid Atlantic woodlands in Wales. It is very rare in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in summer.
