Taxiphyllum wissgrillii Depressed Feather-moss

(Garov.) Wijk & Margad.

This dioicous, pleurocarpous moss forms mats of pale-green, flattened shoots and is similar to Pseudotaxiphyllum elegans. However unlike that species, which is a calcifuge, it grows on calcareous rock such as limestone, usually in shaded locations. It has a patchy distribution in Britain and is largely restricted to areas where there is a calcareous geology. It is occasional in suitable habitats in Wales and is confined to Gower in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are very rare.
