Sphagnum denticulatum

A dioicous bog moss which grows in very wet, nutrient poor habitats, particularly ditches and bog pools but also in soakways on moorland and very wet rocky habitats. It is a chunky species which has rather swollen, curved branches that resemble cow-horns. It is usually an orange-brown colour when growing in well-illumunated sites but some plants can be more yellowish-green, with less curved branches and may be confused with Sphagnum inundatum. It is widespread in western and northern Britain, including Wales and it is common in suitable habitats throughout West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are occasional in summer.
