Schistidium rivulare River Grimmia

(Brid.) Podp.

A autoicous acrocarpous moss which forms sprawling mats on rocks in and beside rivers and also on tree roots that are frequently inundated. The short, dark red capsules are hidden and surrounded by the long leaves. It is a common, riparian species in much of the west and north of Britain except the highlands of Scotland and absent from south and eastern England. It is a familiar river species in Wales and it is frequent on rocks and boulders along the main rivers of Neath Port Talbot in West Glamorgan, but is absent from Gower. Sporophyte capsules are common.
