Sanionia uncinata Sickle-leaved Hook-moss

(Hedw.) Loeske

An autoicous pleurocarpous moss which grows in a wide range of habitats, especially in the lowlands. It is often found as an epiphyte in wet woodlands on willows but also grows on the ground in woodland or on banks and streamsides. Its long, narrow, pleated leaves are strongly curved, sometimes forming circular loops all pointing in one direction. Shoots are often rather tangled and untidy but it is nevertheless an attractive plant. It has a widespread western and northern distribution in Britain and it is found throughout most of Wales, but is nowhere common. There are scattered records in West Glamorgan, all from Neath Port Talbot where it is generally uncommon and unpredictable in moist woodland. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in spring and summer.
