Rhynchostegium confertum Clustered Feather-moss

(Dicks.) Schimp.

A common, autoicous, pleurocarpous moss which grows on stones, walls, bridges, concrete, logs, stumps and soil and very frequently as an epiphyte on basic or nutrient-rich bark. It forms brached mats with concave, egg-shaped leaves which taper to a fine point which gives them a characteristic appearance. Sporophyte capsules have a pronunced beaked lid and are held on erect, smooth stalks. It is found throughout much of Britain but is scarce or absent from much of Scotland. It is ubiquitous in Wales and it is widespread and common in the lowlands of West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in winter and spring.
