Pogonatum urnigerum Urn Haircap

(Hedw.) P.Beauv.

A pioneer, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which grows on gravelly tracks, in quarries and open, disturbed areas. It might be confused with some of the smaller Polytrichum species but it has very distinctive glaucous leaves. It is a common species in the uplands of western and northern Britain and is found throughout Wales. In West Glamorgan it is a common upland species and is frequent along gravelled forest track, among scree and in sandstone in the South Wales Coalfield. Sporophyte capsules are common in winter and spring.
