Plagiomnium cuspidatum Woodsy Thyme-moss

(Hedw.) T.J.Kop.

A synoicous, acrocarpous moss which grows in a variety of different habitats on soil, rock, stumps and tree bases, particularly in base-rich sites. The leaves, which taper gradually at the tip, are toothed in the upper half with bases that run down the stem. They are not arranged in diagonal rows (compare with Plagiomnium affine) and are comparatively small and about as long as broad. It has a rather scattered, predominantly westerm distribution in Britain and is occasional in lowland Wales. It is scarce in West Glamorgan with most records from Gower. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in spring.
