Orthotrichum sprucei Spruce's Bristle-moss

Mont.

A dark-green, autoicous acrocarpous moss which is similar to Orthotrichum rivulare , but usually smaller, and like that species found on the boles of trees and their lower branches in riparian habitats where occasional flooding results in irrigation. Both species have rounded leaf tips which are entire in Orthotrichum spricei but usually toothed in Orthotrichum rivulare. Measurement of leaf cell sizes may be necessary to confirm identification. It is much less common than Orthotrichum rivulare with just a single record in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in summer.
