Orthotrichum rivulare River Bristle-moss

Turner

A dark-green, autoicous acrocarpous moss which grows on the occasionally irrigated bases of trees or their branches along rivers and streams. It is a Suboceanic species, most common in upland areas and it has a scattered western and northern distribution in Britian. The first record of Orthotrichum rivulare in Glamorgan was as recent as 2014 on the River Neath where it was recorded by BS on the exposed roots of Ivy, approximately 1m above normal water level along a section of semi-natural riverbank. It has subsequently been recorded elsewhere downstream along the River Neath at Resolven and Clyne, also on the River Loughor at Garnswllt and on the River Tawe at Pontardawe. Sporophyte capsules are frequent.
