Odontoschisma denudatum Matchstick Flapwort

(Mart.) Dumort.

A small brownish-green, dioicous leafy liverwort which becomes conspicuous when it produces its white or pink gemmae on upright shoots that look like little matchsticks. It grows on rotting logs and peaty soil either in humid woodlands or heathland, sometimes in boulder scree and ocassionally in bogs. It is generally uncommon in Britain with a scattered western and northern distribution but it occurs in many humid, upland woodlands in Wales including conifer plantations. It is scarce in West Glamorgan where it is occurs on decaying logs in valley woodlands. Sporophytes are rare but gemmae are usually produced in abundance.
