Neckera pumila Dwarf Neckera

Hedw.

A dioicous, epiphytic pleurocarpous moss which grows in sheltered places in broad leaved woodland and plantations mostly on smooth barked trees such as ash, sycamore and beech but frequently on willows in plantations. It is a smaller plant than Neckera crispa and the shoots often flare outwards in a characteristic way. The leaves are undulate but they taper gradually towards the slightly pointed tip which is unlike the more rounded leaf tipĀ of Neckea crispa. Filamentous, axillary branches are sometimes found among the shoots. It is a Suboceanic species and it has a distinct western distribution in Britain. It is rather uncommon in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are occasional to rare.
