Nardia compressa Compressed Flapwort

(Hook.) Gray

A rich green, dioicous leafy liverwort which grows on rocks in fast-flowing, oligotrophic, upland streams and rivers. It can form extensive mats and cushions in favourable places with relatively long shoots that bear rounded leaves which are compressed laterally near the tips. It has a distinct western and northern distribution in Britain and it is frequent in much of the Welsh uplands. It is occasional or locally frequent in the upland streams of West Glamorgan but is absent from Gower. Sporophytes capsules are occasional.
