Metzgeria conjugata Rock Veilwort

Lindb.

An autoicous, thallose liverwort which grows in patches on mildly calcareous and base-rich siliceous rocks but rarely on limestone. It grows more loosely attached to the surface than the similar, dioicous Metzgeria furcata, with which it can be confused. Also, unlike that species it rarely grows on bark. It is a species of humid and usually shaded habitats such as sheltered ravines and woodlands and it is strictly a species of western and northern Britain. It is widespread in Wales, but very local in West Glamorgan where it is found in Nedd Fechan valley near Pont Nedd Fechan. Sporophyte capsules are frequent.
