Lophozia ventricosa Tumid Notchwort

(Dicks.) Dumort.

A bright green, dioicous leafy liverwort and the most common Lophozia species in Britain. It grows in a wide range of acidic habitats particularly peaty ground on heaths and moors and on decaying logs. It is occasionaly found on leached soils on sand dunes, calcareous rocks and in quarries. The leaves have a characteristic, shallow v-shaped notch. It is widespread throughout the west and north of Britain, mostly in the uplands but not exclusively. It is very common in Wales and it is scattered in West Glamorgan but most common on the acidic soils in the uplands of the South Wales Coalfield. Sporophytes are common in spring and summer.
