Lophocolea fragrans Fragrant Crestwort

(Moris & De Not.) Gottsche, Lindenb. & Nees

A very small, autoicous, Oceanic leafy liverwort which grows closely appressed to hard rock surfaces, or tree roots, in shaded places in humid woodlands and ravines and also in sea caves. The leaves have 3 or 4 teeth and plants have a distinct, aromatic smell. It has the typical western distribution of an oceanic species in Britain and it is far more common in west Wales than south Wales. It is very rare in West Glamorgan where it was found by BS in 2013 on a fallen branch in Cilibion Plantation. Sporophytes are common.
