Lophocolea bidentata Bifid Crestwort

(L.) Dumort.

An autoicous leafy liverwort with a wide ecological tolerance and able to grow in lots of different habitats such as on soil in woodland, on living bark and decaying logs, rocks, walls and boulders, marshy and flushed areas and mesotrophic grasslands. It has a faint but pleasant fragrance and the translucent shoots bear ditinctive, 2 lobed leaves. It is one of the most common leafy liverworts in Britain and is found throughout except for the summit areas of Scottish mountains. It is ubiquitous in Wales and extremely common in West Glamorgan. Sporophytes are common.
