(Hedw.) Ochyra
A very common, dioicous, pleurocarpous moss which grows on the ground, on logs and as an epiphyte in woodland and also grows in grasslands, including lawns. It has pinnate shoots with rather fine, small branch leaves that differ greatly from the larger stem leaves which are triangular in shape with an elongated tip and widened at the base so as to clasp the stem. It is probably the most common pleurocrpous moss in Britain and it is found throughout except for the highest ground in Scotland. It is one of the most abundant and common bryophytes in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules, which have a prominent beaked lid, are frequent in winter.
