Hygroamblystegium humile Constricted Feather-moss

(P.Beauv.) Vanderp. et al.

An autoicous, pleurocarpous moss which forms rather nondescript, untidy patches in marshes and muddy places, sometimes in abundance. The widely spreading leaves have a nerve that ceases below the tip (see photo). It resembles Amblystegium varium which is found in similar places but the nerve in that species reaches the tip of the leaf. It is scarce in Britain, particularly in the west and north and there are very few records of it in Wales. However, it may be overlooked and misidentified for other Anblystegium-like species. It is not common in West Glamorgan but there are records of it from marshy habitats in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in summer.
