Hookeria lucens Shining Hookeria

(Hedw.) Sm.

Hookeria lucens is an autoicous, pleurocarpous moss which is found in the wetter areas of forests, typically associated with Oceanic/Atlantic oak woodland. In Britain it is a locally frequent in the west and north and it is found in much of Wales. It is locally common in West Glamorgan and widespread in both the deciduous and coniferous woodlands of the Neath and Afan Valleys, where it is found commonly on the wet banks of streams and ditches. The pale, flattened, translucent shoots have an almost unique appearance which resembles a large leafy liverwort. The extremely large cells in the leaves (see photos) are visible with a hand lens and contribute to the plant's almost transparent appearance. Sporophyte capsules are occasional.
