Homalothecium sericeum Silky Wall Feather-moss

(Hedw.) Schimp.

A golden-green, dioicous, pleurocarpous moss which grows on hard, usually vertical substrates such as rocks, walls, asbestos roofs and the trunks and boles of trees. The long shoots have very short brabches and strongly pleated leaves. When dry the branches curl inwards in a characteristic way and straighten rapidly when wetted. It is a very common moss in Britain with an almost ubiquitous distribution and it is found throughout the lowlands of West Glamorgan, particularly on walls. Sporophyte capsules are occasional.
