(Hedw.) H.Rob.
A yellowish-geen, dioicous, pleurocarpous moss which grows in dry, calcareous turf and sand dunes in open, sunny places. The irregularly branched stems bear narrowly triangular, pleated leaves that have a finely pointed tip. It is found throughout much of Britain, except the far north, particularly in coastal regions and areas with a calcareous geology. It is common along the coast of south Wales, but absent from much of the inland parts of mid and north Wales. It is very common in coastal areas of West Glamorgan where it is often abundant in fixed dunes and calcareous grsslands. It is less common inland but it is found occasionally along the edges of forest roads that have been dressed with calcareous gravel. Sporophyte capsules are rare.
