Gyroweisia tenuis Slender Stubble-moss

(Hedw.) Schimp.

A very small, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which often forms extensive patches on soft, porous rock that is not too acidic and often with some base-richness. It is similar to Gymnostomium viridulum but it is not confined to limestone and the leaves of that species are much broader and produced on plants that are a much brighter green. It is found throughout Britain but is rather local in Wales where it is most common in the south. It is very rare in West Glamorgan with just one record from west Gower. Most plants are females and sporophyte capsules are rather rare.
