Gymnostomum aeruginosum Verdigris Tufa-moss

Sm.

A dioicous, acrocarpous moss which produces dull-green mounds or cushions on vertical rock faces, including walls and bridges, especially where there is seepage of water. It often occurs on limestone but is not confined to base-rich rocks. When dry, the leaves become incurved and twisted. It is largely an upland or montane species, found throughout western and northern Britain but with a patchy distibution in Wales. In West Glamorgan it is most common in Neath Port Talbot where it is encountered frequently on old stone walls and bridges but it is also found on limestone rock and walls along the south Gower coast. Sporophyte capsules are occasional in autumn and winter.
