Grimmia trichophylla Hair-pointed Grimmia

Grev.

A dioicous, calcifuge, acrocarpous moss which grows on acidic granite and sandstones in exposed coastal or inland situations, but most typically in the uplands. The rounded cushions are light green with a hoary appearance as a result of the numerous long, white hair points on the leaves. Racomitrium heterostichum is similar and a source of confusion, but it has hair points that are flattened at their base. Grimmia trichophylla has a western and northern distribution in Britain and it is found throughout Wales. However, it is absent or rather uncommon in many parts of south Wales and most records of it in West Glamorgan are from Cefn Bryn and Rhossili Down in Gower. The ribbed, egg-shaped sporophyte capsules are rare from spring to summer.
